Next Week: American Lives at the Forum

Next week, the School of American Studies is heading out into Norwich for a series of exciting events exploring what America 'means' to it's diverse population and the variety of ways in which it is imagined from within its national borders. Monday 4th July to Friday 8th July.

UEA School of American Studies present a series of free lunchtime talks 12.00 - 13.00 which will include a short discussion at the end of each session:

Monday July 4 - Dr Rebecca Fraser - African Americans and the challenges of independence in nineteenth century America.

Tuesday July 5 - Dr Jacqueline Fear-Segal The Lost Ones: the Long Journey Home. This film, traces the history of two Apache children: their capture, imprisonment, forced schooling, and eventual ‘recovery’ by their descendants in the twenty-first century.

Wednesday July 6 - Professor Nick Selby Jasper Johns: The Familiar Flag
Jasper Johns’ Flag (1954-55), a painting of the American Flag, is one of the most familiar pieces of modern American Art.  This talk will discuss how Johns came to paint – or more properly, make – this piece

Thursday July 7- Sarah Churchwell Becoming Marilyn: The Invention of Marilyn Monroe.

Friday July 8 - Professor Chris Bigsby - The Life of Arthur Miller. Chris Bigsby is author of two Arthur Miller biographies Arthur Miller 1915-1962 and Arthur Miller 1962-2005

Fusion will be open from 11.00 until 15.00 Monday to Friday and will be showing a selection of films shot by US Air force men who were based in Norfolk during World War 2.

Saturday 9th July
UEA School of American Studies presents an evening with Tom Paley and Michael Roach
Bringing together two of the greatest exponents of American Folk and Blues for an intimate evening of music.
