The Battle of Bull Run |
Yesterday was the 150th anniversary of the First Battle of Bull Run - the first "real" battle of the Civil War. In keeping with the coverage that the sesquicentennial has received so far, the internet has provided a number of rich ways to mark the anniversary.
- The New York Times Disunion blog gives you a play-by-play of the battle itself by Gary Gallagher, an account of a Virginia cavalry regiment's experience of the battle by Ronald S. Coddington, and the story of Ambrose Burnside's valet.
- The Library of America provides you with British journalist William Howard Russell's famous account of the battle, and a post by Brooks D. Simpson on Confederate women and Bull Run.
- The Washington Post House Divided blog is reporting live from the reenactments and other commemorative events taking place in Manassas, provides a photo-gallery here, and is live-tweeting the battle here.
- And finally: The American Literary blog presents two different poetic reactions to the battle.
